Life After the Earthquake

A Journey to Community Recovery

Recovering from a traumatic natural disaster such as the 7.4 magnitude earthquake which hit the coast of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur on December 02, 2023 requires a coordinated effort from various government agencies, NGOs, and the affected community. Collaboratively, they have to focus on delivering prompt medical aid, reinstating vital utilities like electricity and water, evaluating and fixing damaged infrastructure, and organizing psychological care and guidance for the affected individuals.

Sitio Mawes, an island community of Hinatuan, is one of the greatly affected areas by the earthquake. Sitio Mawes requires special attention and resources in the recovery process due to its isolated location and limited access to essential services. While the Local Government Unit of Hinatuan took steps to provide the Mawesanon community with financial support and relief supplies, it is important to acknowledge that non-governmental organizations have also made an effort to offer additional aid and support to aid Sitio Mawes in their recovery process.

On January 16, 2024, ADRA Philippines in partnership with Balbuena Integrated School conducted Psychological First Aid  and Outreach Program for the residents of Sitio Mawes. The program aimed to provide psychological support and help the residents most especially the students cope with the emotional impact of the earthquake and to give them food assistance to help alleviate their immediate needs. Teachers of Balbuena Integrated School also took part in the PFA as they too have felt the emotional and mental stress brought about by the earthquake.

Despite the bad weather, the activity still proceeded with full precaution and safety with the help of all ADRA volunteers, BIS Faculty, and Purok Officials. In a nutshell, the day ended with the Mawesanon being grateful for the support that they have received.
