There is no way to know when or where an earthquake will occur. Yet experts predict that a 7.2 magnitude earthquake is brewing in the West Valley Fault, which crosses most of Metro Manila.
Historians and scientist believe the time is near for a strong earthquake to happen due to the periodic movements of that fault (the fault has moved 3 times in the las 400 years, but the last was 356 years ago). According to studies its about time for the “Big One” to occur.
These projections have brought about worry because of the possible impact that it will have in Metro Manila and Quezon City. In a city of more than 10 million, more than 33 thousand deaths are expected, 100 thousand plus injured and almost 50% damage to infrastructure.
The overall damages would be outstanding, but the possible isolation of the area due to damages to communication and roads is something that worries the authorities even more. Another preoccupation lies with the posible hazards caused in the aftermath of the earthquake. Fires, landslides and liquefaction would occur all over the region after the tremor, aftershocks should be considered as well.
We may not be able to stop the “Big One” from happening, it may not even happen in our lifetime. Even so we should prepare and raise awareness, disasters can be mitigated. ADRA Philippines works with communities all over the country in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) projects trying to create resiliency and resistance to Natural and Man-Made disasters.
We will continue to work and be ready to help those in need when disaster strikes, but also work to get everyone ready for whatever comes our way. #DapatRedingRedi
